Today was day two with Mama and her babies. We named them today! Since we rescued them on St. Patricks day, it was only fitting that their names be Irish.

Mama and Babies

This morning, Dan and I woke up at 4:30 am to head to Lake County Animal Services to pick up a mama and her babies that were dumped there a few days ago by their former owner. The shelter was actually closed today, but the super nice animal control officer met us there at 7 am so that we could get mama and babies out of the shelter and into a home sooner rather than later. Mama is very thin, but we will fix that right up. Her babies are currently two weeks old and will be ready to go to their forever homes when they are eight weeks old. Meet the beautiful Miss Daisy! Daisy was dumped at a kill shelter by her former owners when they were done using her as a breeding machine. Due to the tireless networking of one amazing shelter employee, Nikki Swedberg, Heart Dog noticed Daisy and had to save her. She’s been spayed, so now Daisy gets to BE the baby instead of HAVING babies. Daisy will be available for adoption in a few weeks. She’s young, healthy, happy, snuggly, gets along well with other dogs and loves to give kisses.

Pet Pal Animal Shelter

We spent Valentines Day at Pet Pal Animal Shelter hanging out with some of their dogs. Notice the last photo in the gallery… We posted Toby’s photo on facebook the night of Valentines Day. Before we even got a chance to blog this session, he was adopted and we got to change his watermark from “Adopt Me” to ADOPTED! WOOHOO!!

Pet Pal Animal Shelter

Pet Pal Animal Shelter is by far one of the nicest shelters I’ve ever been to. It’s incredibly clean and doesn’t smell like a typical shelter at all. All the humans there have such a great attitude, and the positive energy flows through the whole building, right through to the animals. I had a blast hanging out with the cats and dogs there today, and I’m really looking forward to going back on Tuesday to get more photos of other adoptables.

Saving the Sebring Dogs

In mid December Erica, the founder of Dolly’s Foundation, called me with some news. There was a dog fighting bust a few hours from us in Sebring, Florida. The dogs had been kept in horrendous conditions, chained to trees and dog houses with only dark, disgusting, algae filled water available. You can read the articles about it written by local papers here, here, here, and here.

Thanks to SB722 which Dolly’s Foundation helped pass in June 2011, the dogs were all going to be given a chance at life and allowed to be individually evaluated and released to qualified rescue organizations. Prior to SB722 being passed, dogs seized from fight busts were automatically deemed dangerous and euthanized without any sort of evaluation. Thankfully for these dogs, the state asked Dolly’s Foundation for help with evaluations and placement.

A few days after Christmas, we were allowed to go start evaluating the dogs. We teamed up with Joe and Kim of Tampa Bay Bullies and Connie of Best Friends Animal Society and headed out to perform evaluations. We’ve also been working with rescue organizations across the country to responsibly find placement for everyone.

The state has won custody of the first 16 dogs and we’re ready to get them to their respective rescues! Thanks to the Humane Society of Highlands County and the fundraising efforts of the Highlands County Sheriff’s Department, all 16 will be getting spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before their long, cross country journey to place everyone and help get them started with their new lives.

Allie, Joe, Rileigh, Angel and Gunner

I had such a fantastic session a few days ago with Allie, Joe, Rileigh, Angel and Gunner. Rileigh, Angel and Gunner were SO well behaved and loved the camera. I honestly think Gunner has secret aspirations of being a model.

One of Allie and Joe’s goals for this session was to get an image to use for Christmas cards. I am so excited to see which one they choose!

Earlier this week I hooked up with Laura, the vice president of StubbyDog to take some photos for a marketing campaign they’re working on. Bruschi, Paisley and Darla were kind enough to be our dog models for the shoot. They LOVED Laura and Bruschi kept sneaking in kisses every chance he got.
